BENEATH THE SURFACE
From looking at my Pinterest page, I realised I pinned a lot of photographs and photographers that capture movement, emotion and use overlaying techniques to reveal the final construction. Due to this, I decided to focus my ‘Beneath the Surface’ project on portraits.
I decided to do more in depth research into the work of Rankin and research the artist Helmo.
Here is my first shoot and my first attempt of capturing emotion through images and overlaying them together using colours that reflect the models emotion.
I FIRST CHOOSE TWO IMAGES THAT CONTRASTED WITH ONE ANOTHER VIA EMOTION. FIRST IMAGE, I CHOOSE ONE THAT APPEARED TO BE QUITE SAD AND SERIOUS.
WITH MY FIRST IMAGE, I CONVERTED THE COLOUR TO BLUE. THIS IS BECAUSE STEREOTYPICALLY, BLUE HAS CONNOTATIONS OF SADNESS AND DEPRESSION. THIS COLOUR MATCHED MY MODELS FACIAL EXPRESSION.
AGAIN, I CONVERTED THIS PHOTOGRAPH INTO A ORANGE/YELLOW AS IT HAS CONNOTATIONS OF HAPPINESS.
I FIRST CHOOSE TWO IMAGES THAT CONTRASTED WITH ONE ANOTHER VIA EMOTION. FIRST IMAGE, I CHOOSE ONE THAT APPEARED TO BE QUITE SAD AND SERIOUS.
I wanted to capture both Rankin's and Helmo's work into my edits because combining them both meant that I would be utilising both of my favourite ideas from my pinterest boards. Capturing contrasting emotions and editing the colours to the connotations of those facial expressions highlights the brief of beneath the surface. The juxtaposition of these colours and connotations suggests that not all is what it seems – beneath the surface of everyone’s appearance there’s hidden emotions.
